Lighter would be better and stand out on the dark floor. Kitchen tile, you could go with the tumbled tile in a sand color, and maybe paint the kitchen a pale sage color. That is the "in" color this year. If your floor is real Mahogany, you should use a wood floor cleaner like Murphy's Oil Soap. I have had really good luck with that.
