I’d like to know the absolute essentials to buy for the baby’s furniture? I’m 22 weeks and will have to start purchasing items for the nursery.
And feel free to add the items you don’t need and why….

You do not need a change table, just use a bed.
Proud mommy to Alexander says: The only thing I used at the beginning was a bassinett b/c that way he was right with me at all times, so you’ll probably want that. Then after about 6 weeks or so you can move him into a crib. A changing table is nice to have although you can change a baby anywhere. A diaper genie was a godsend for me (don’t think that’s really considered furniture). Oh and a glider, you will need that for rocking him to sleep.I don’t know what I would do without that!! ¢ α я м s & т ω ι η к ℓ є says: Congrats on being 22 weeks! There isn’t much in the way of ‘essential items’ when it comes to kitting out your nursery with furniture. All Mommies have their own way of storing things and making their nursery work for them, it’s often a matter of how much room space you have to work with in the first place too.
The first essential if baby is going to be sleeping in the nursery is the cot or cot/bed. Some new Moms choose a moses basket or smaller crib to start off with as this can be moved about the house for naps and is generally a less overwhelming size for a newborn. It isn’t necessary though and you can happily start off with using a full size crib, just placing baby to sleep at the foot-end for safety.
One thing you won’t need necessarily is a cot-top changer or even a dressing/ changing table. It’s often much more practical to change baby on a mat on the floor or even take him/ her to your own bedroom and do so on the bed. It’s more of a ‘luxury item’ in my eyes and don’t think I’ll be buying one.
Room for baby’s clothes: you don’t really need a wardrobe, you can make do just fine with having clear plastic storage boxes for the meantime to house clothes, socks etc. It also makes it easier to see what you’re looking for as you can section different items into different drawers. By all means, a wardrobe looks lovely with a matching cot but if you don’t feel the need to have one, you don’t need it!

Space for bedding/ nappies/ towels and blankets etc: Another storage unit like the one above would be just fine (you can even stack them one on top of the other to save space). Alternatively, if there is to be room/ space under baby’s cot, you can use flat storage boxes for these and store bits and pieces under the cot itself. Keeps everything out of sight that isn’t needed and tidy!

Cot bed – cot bed is better as it will tun into a bed and save you buying one until they are about 8 years old!
changing unit – i thought this was pretty useless so didnt buy one after my son was born i rushed out a brought one right away!
Bouncer chair -these are god sends! especially as your baby becomes more awake and alert, i have one that has vibration settings on
Moses basket and stand – this is idealfor the lounge as newborns SLEEEP! lol
Baby monitor -so you can sit and have an evening to your self while your baby is asleep and know that he/she is safe, i have fisher price sounds and lights
Play gym – especially one with bright colours mixed with blacks and whites! these are great for helping them focus and as they get to a few months help with thier coordination i have countless different ones!
a few soft toys/teddies – to help them feel cosy and secure
strorage! – babies come with alot of stuff! i set aside a cupboard in my kitchen for feeding stuff, luckily i already had a cupboard built in my front room for toys etc, a small wardrobe for toys, under the changing unit for nappies and wet wipes etc and a few small plastic boxes for things like hats, bibs, booties, dummies and muslin squares.
safety bits – ie stairgate its amazing how quick you will need this! my son is almost 5 months old and is rolling everywhere! plug socket covers, corner protectors, cupborad locks etc (you can buy a pack of all the little bits from mothercare and argos (its made by lindam)
Changing mat – obviously one for on the changing unti if it isnt built with one and one for the lounge to mae changing easy!
work top space – it takes alot of space making up bottle ect to ft the steriliser on the side and stuff so make sure you have a wipeable work surface to do this on!
Mobiles, lightshades, curtains, picture etc for babies room – something that will last them atleat until they start school! i got mine in mothercare but it can work out really expensive try Kiddicare.com
Bath support – you really dont realise how vital these are until you bath your baby for the first time! i have a plastic shaped one from mothercare it has little suctionpads that hold it to the bottm of the bath to stop it slipping and is tilted so my little boy wasnt right in the water and it was easier to wash him.
Ifyour baby is going to be in thier own room from the start you might want to consider a comfy chair or guest bed!

Bouncy chair!
I bought nothing else, I figured a changing table as a waste, I used a foot stool downstairs and the bed upstairs and bought absorbent mats to put under my son. I just dedicated a drawer in my dresser for his clothes too and moved my stuff to the wardrobe. The bouncy chair was invaluable, he hated being put lying flat and refused to sleep in his cot, so he spent the first two months sleeping in his bouncy chair set up in his cot. It was great too during the day, he was happy to go in there and just watch me and my husband come and go and make silly faces at him while we got on with things around the house.
3rdXCharm says: a crib, a place to put clothes..i’d recommend a dresser/changing table. a place for you to sit. like a nice rocking chair. that baby will need a swing or bouncer and those are the bare bones for a decent nursery. i’d like to add a pack-n-play or bassinet that is mobile so baby can sleep or rest around the house where you can keep an eye on him. congrats! i can’t wait to start shopping!
